Dental Sealants View Photos

Dental sealants are protective barriers applied to the chewing surfaces of posterior teeth ( pre-molars and molars) where decay occurs most often. Sealants function as barriers against decay-causing bacteria.

How does sealants help prevent decay?

Sealants are plastic materials that bond to the pits, fissures and grooves on the chewing surface of the posterior teeth forming a smooth surface that help prevent food debris and plaque from adhering  to the tooth and causing decay.

Are sealants beneficial for adults too?

There is always a possibility of developing decay on the pits, fisuures and grooves of posterior teeth at any stage in life because of the ever- present decay-causing bacteria in our mouths. Thus, even adults can benefit from sealants.

People with a high diet in carbohydrates and sweets and those in communities with non-fluoridated water are more prone than others to have decay.

Are sealants permanent?

Sealants, like any dental restoration are subject to wear and tear. It is for this reason that dentists must check them on a regular basis to assure their integrity. If they show leakage and damage due to wear and tear, they should be replaced.
